The Atlantis Resort, on Paradise Island in The Bahamas, is world renowned for its family friendly environment, offering activities for kids of all ages to enjoy, from the current Cartoon Network ‘Summer @ Atlantis’ water feature to Club CRUSH, a teenagers-only nightclub. My summer crew of kids and I had the pleasure of experiencing a tour of the entire water habitat at the resort, and it did not disappoint.
Atlantis has the largest open air aquarium in the Caribbean with more than 50,000 aquatic animals and 250 marine species. Our first stop was the Fish Hospital where we were able to interact with a few special sea creatures.
Here, the kids got to get up close and personal with starfish, sea urchins, turtles and were even able to pet a nurse shark! They also learned about how they eat and survive in the wild.
Next, we visited The Dig – a set of tunnels through the Lost City of Atlantis – with various marine exhibits with eels, crawfish, lionfish and piranhas. Walking through the dark tunnels was both exciting and a little scary for the smallest member of our group. But even she was mesmerized by the thousands of fish around us as we passed along. The kids were able to identify each fish with a special identification card that was provided at the entrance.
After The Dig, we visited a number of lagoons located throughout the property. Just walking through the resort grounds is an experience in itself. We felt the theme of The Lost City everywhere we went. The attention to detail is incredible.
The Atlantis resort provides both fun and educational activities for the whole family. We often worry that during summer vacation our children lose a few brain cells from having too much fun and not enough learning. This tour certainly helps to address that concern, as the kids learned about marine life and had fun doing it; and admittedly, so did I.
